One of the best things about making a paper model by hand rather than using computer, is that you actually get to build stuff using paper right from the start! (which is the fun part of papercraft of course ;o)
Making a paper model by hand is a lot like "scratch building": you pretty much start somewhere, and add, trim and change parts as you go along.
For models like this, I usually make a framework first and then I cover that with paper to work out the shape of the parts for the skin of the model (the internal framework won't be in the final model).
And now you can also see why it's a good idea to print the schematics at the size of the model, so you can very easily check the size and shape of parts.
In this stage the parts are held in place with tape, because that way I can take them apart very easily to trim and change them a bit if necessary, and to copy them for the final version once I'm happy with them. ;o)
