One of the seven Wonders of the Ancient World was the Pharos (lighthouse) of Alexandria, constructed to guide ships safely to port.
By day, a large polished, metal mirror would reflect the sunlight out to sea, and by night, a large fire would illuminate the top of the 117 meter (!) tall tower.
Although the Pharos has long been destroyed, many ancient travelers have described the appearance of this marvel of ancient construction (and there were even souvenirs sold as it also quickly became a tourist attraction even in ancient times! ;o) so we have a good idea how it must have looked.
