The Trade Federation used their army of battle droids as command droids, pilots and security droids prior to the Battle of Naboo (Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace).
Although physically exactly the same as the later developed B1 series battle droids (apart from some colour codings), these OOM series battle droids had more advanced and independant programming, while the B1 series was centrally controlled by a Droid Control Ship and mostly served as cannon fodder on the battlefield...
