Baron Manfred von Richthofen is arguably the most famous fighter pilot ever - although probably under his nickname "the Red Baron", which he got after painting his plane bright red instead of camouflaging it as ordered by his superiors...
Although the Fokker Dr.I wasn't the first plane that Von Richthofen painted red, it is the one that most people associate with his nickname! ;o)
