Honey, I Shrunk Dark Helmet... (LEGO Darth Vader papercraft WIP)

I am soooo sorry... I couldn't help myself making a Space Balls / Honey I Shrunk The Kids reference... 😝

As you can see, my Paper Vader is coming along very nicely! Although to be honest the difficult part is still to come of course... Stay tuned!

free papercraft Toyota Hilux (+contest if you're a kid from Japan! ;o)

The Tokushima Toyota company wants to do something fun for kids that have to stay home at the moment... So they made a webpage where you can download coloring pages and even a Toyota Hilux land cruiser papercraft for free!

...and for children in Japan, they are even having a contest where they an send a picture of their colored or papercraft car using the form on their website (link) and get a nice sticker or even win an ecological gift bag! 😀

(but of course if you're not from Japan, you can still enjoy the free papercraft Toyota Hilux without entering the contest 😉)

These are from the Kintetsu bus company, that operates local transit buses but also the Osaka Sky Vista open top double-decker tour bus! But right now, it might be better to stay home and just enjoy the free papercrafts. 🙂

A New Helmet: Papercraft LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader (start)

So it finally happened: me making a papercraft LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader! 😊

Because most pieces are the same for each of my papercraft LEGO minifigs, I 'only' had to recolor/retexture the head and torso, make a cape and, most importantly of course, A New Helmet...

Apparantly I actually first seriously thought about starting a LEGO Darth Vader papercraft on a Tuesday 📆 (in 2015 😉) when I just scanned the pieces in preparation to recreate the torso pattern and the new pieces:

As you can see from the torso I scanned back then, the Darth Vader minifig I had then was the early version (sw0004a). But when I recently picked up the idea of a paper Vader again, I decided I liked the 'Death Star' version (sw0209) with all the buttons better, so I made a new torso pattern in Photoshop:

The scans of the helmet didn't prove very useful. They were just good enough to get the overal shape and size, but I couldn't really distinguish all the small details in the face part properly. Most LEGO pieces including the minifigs are pretty geometrical, but special pieces like Darth Vader's helmet have lots of small, curvy details, especially in the face...

I gave it a shot though in SketchUp refined it a bit in Metasequoia, unfolded it in Pepakura Designer to make the test build you see. And although it's definitely not an exact replica of the original LEGO piece, I really like how it turned out!

I made the helmet in three 'assemblies' (the outside, the face, and the inside) and that way I could glue these three pieces together relatively easy to close it (which is always a bit tricky because when you glue on the final part of a closed model you can't reach inside the papercraft anymore for adjustments... 😆)

So stay tuned while I change some of the parts that I want to do a little bit differently and I build the final version, so I'll probably be able to release it pretty soon! 😀

free papercraft Stone Trek U.S.S. Magnetize BCC-1701

Many years ago, I found Erwin de Jong's free papercraft model of the starship S.E.V. Enterforaprize from the Star Trek parody comic series Sev Trek created by John Cook. In this iteration of the classic Star Trek, the starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 is reenvisioned as a pizza with a pair of cigarettes as warp nacelles and a beer can as the hull...

So yeah, the Sev Trek series was not to be taken seriously, just for good fun.😋

But did you know about Brian Matthews's Stone Trek? 😉

It's another Star Trek parody series (as a series of short Flash cartoons) this time think "the Flintstones meet Star Trek", with the U.S.S. Magnetize BCC-1701 being made from wood and rocks. And again, it's also available as a free papercraft, thanks to Gary Pilsworth!

Spyro the Dragon & Sparx by Navi (and all her old ones still too! ;o)

Guess who messaged me through Twitter today? It's Navi, who you will remember (well you should!) from her awesome papercrafts like Banjo-Kazooie, Animal Crossing's Jingle, a Star Fox Arwing, the Pokémon Totodile and Zora Link and the Bremen and Sun Masks from Majora's Mask!

She told me that after all those years, she decided to move her website to a new server, so update your links, because not only are all her previous papercrafts still there to enjoy, she made a new one too: Spyro the Dragon & Sparx! 🐲

So what are you waiting for?? Go say "hi!" and try out her papercrafts! (and send her some pictures if you do! 😊)

Papercraft Monkey Island 4 Guybrush Threepwood test build complete

After a wild night in town with Manny, papercraft test build Guybrush is understandably a bit anxious to go home to Elaine with his arm missing...

But I'm sure she'll forgive him after one look at that handsome papercraft face...! 🥰

All joking aside though, I'm pretty happy with how Guybrush's head turned out, so I'll go ahead, fix some small issues, and make the final version; stay tuned! 🙂

lots of new free Mondorf papercrafts

The Kallboys made several new free papercrafts since last time I checked, like a stylish Apollo motor yacht, some simplified papercrafts especially for younger kids to put together, a Roman temple, the Zur Siegfahre restaurant, a railway service trolley and even a ferris wheel! 🎡😃

Papercraft Monkey Island 4 Guybrush Threepwood test build

So: obviously I've started test building paper Guybrush!😃 (actually I'm pretty far already with just the head left to do (I'm not going to test build his left arm, because it's basically the same as his right one and that went together fine 😉)

With papercrafts like this that have a coat that goes over the legs (like Manny💀 had as well) I like to make them in two parts (well three if you count the head 👱), the torso and the legs. That way, the two parts are easy to build separately, and you can simply glue the legs inside the torso when they're done.

One note about Guybrush's shoes: they're surprisingly intricate! I made them a bit simplified even from the original ones, but there are still quite a few folds on these slender pieces so you need to keep your head with it...! ...oh ehm, sorry Guybrush! 👞 😉

Stay tuned! 😃

free papercraft MV Munster

A few days ago, Thanadol asked me to share the papercraft shopping mall building he made, but this time he's back to making paper boats. And this time it's extra special, because this MV Munster is the first papercraft he created completely using the computer! 🚢

Wanna see an upskirt shot? (of Guybrush's papercraft WIP? ;o)

Why am I taking upskirt shots of Guybrush...?

Well, I wanted to show you what I did with his groin! (wait that doesn't sound any better, does it...?)

But in all seriousness, I simplified Guybrush's head quite a lot, which for me fits a lot better with the (relatively 😇) simple style I want to make this papercraft in.

And then I looked at his legs and butt and felt that I wanted his legs to go into his jacket kinda like on Manny's papercraft, so I remodelled that part a bit.

It's actually going scaringly well again, so I hope this will be another fun papercraft! 😃

Remodelling the literal armpits of Guybrush (and other stuff; Guybrush papercraft WIP update)

I find that pretty much all extracted video game models need work before they can be made into nice papercrafts. Usually there are problems with collisions around the joints like the shoulders and elbows and other areas.

Guybrush is no different, and as I said in the tutorial, the extraction process is not perfect (even though GLXtractor is a great tool!) and his armpits are literal pits, and his elbows don't look quite right either... So these needed some extra remodelling, which is really just a matter of making it look right in a way that you know you can make out of paper without too much problems.

Another thing that's worth mentioning, is the overall look of Guybrush's 3D model: if you compare it with Manny's game model, you can see Guybrush is quite a bit more complex! He even has an open mouth with teeth!

I really liked the (relative 😇) simplicity of Manny's papercraft though, so I want to try and make Guybrush a 'not-too-complex' papercraft as well, which means remodelling the head a bit to avoid having a million pieces for his face. 😉

Stay tuned!
