Papercraft Royal Netherlands Navy Walrus-class submarine release!

I usually make papercraft models of video games, movies, etc., but this time I wanted to experiment a bit making this papercraft Royal Netherlands Navy Walrus-class submarine! ;o)

 

It's definitely not an exact replica, but the parts and instructions to build your own papercraft Royal Netherlands Navy Walrus-class submarine are on my papercraft webpage as always:

The parts (pages 1-5) are blank, to be printed on thicker (160-200 gsm) black/dark cardstock; pages 6-7 can be printed on cheap, regular printer paper to serve as templates to make the strengthening "ribs" and display stand out of thick, strong carton (note that depending on the thickness of the paper you use, you might need to make the ribs a tiny bit bigger or smaller for a *perfect* fit!)

 

The hull parts are big enough to use the "butt-joint" technique, to get a smooth hull without raised ridges that you normally get from overlapping parts; but other parts like the periscopes are *very* tiny, and are edge-glued on without glueing tabs at all (pretty tricky...! ;o)

The papercraft Royal Netherlands Navy Walrus-class submarine I've been showing the past few weeks was actually a project I've been planning to do for a *looong* time already, so I haven't shown you the process from the very start;

It's really basically the same as all my computermade paper models from scratch of course, namely making a 3D model from scale model drawings, unfolding that in Pepakura Designer, and then using different programs to fix the final issues and things for the actual papercraft templates.

In the end, you end up with 5 sheets of parts to be printed on black/dark cardstock paper, and 2 sheets that basically just serve as templates to create the stand and the ribs that give the submarine its shape and strength from thicker carton/cardboard:

So my papercraft Walrus-class submarine is basically done now (it's definitely not a 100% accurate replica, but it definitely was a lot of fun to work on, with a few different techniques than I usually use ;o) and once the instructions are done, I'll put it up on my papercraft webpage of course!

Papercraft Royal Netherlands Navy Walrus-class submarine WIP 4

This is basically how the hull of my papercraft Royal Netherlands Navy Walrus-class submarine will come together, with the separate "butt-joint" tabs and the ribs to give the hull its shape cut from thick carton/cardboard.

I did the test build with 200 gsm paper though, and the black paper I'm using for the final version is a *little bit* thinner, and it actually makes a bigger difference than you'd think...!

As you can see, the hull parts get "wrapped" and glued around the ribs, but because the paper is thinner than on the test build, the parts are actually a *little bit* too long now...!

Or rather, the ribs are a tiny bit smaller than they should be now with the thinner paper.

So from now on, because I'm using thinner paper, I will have to cut the ribs a *little bit* bigger than I made them based them on the test build; how much bigger exactly, I will have to work out for each of them separately until they fit of course. ;o)

So the test build for my papercraft Royal Netherlands Navy Walrus-class submarine is pretty much done! ;o)

The periscopes and other masts on the "sail" are really tiny, so I had to really pre-shape them very thoroughly to be able to glue them into their tube shapes:

Like I said before, I won't really be adding any texture details or anything, so I can start the final version with the changes from the test build right away! (when I have the time again of course... ;o)

I didn't get a whole lot done this week, other than finishing the test build of the hull! (and I'm already planning on changing several things of it for the final version... ;o)

Papercraft Royal Netherlands Navy Walrus-class submarine WIP 1

Although I usually make paper models from video games or movies, this time I've been working on a "real world" model, a Walrus-class submarine from the Royal Netherlands Navy.

I plan on printing it on dark/black cardstock, so it will basically be a simple, "blank" model with just lines;

For the hull, I want to use the "butt-joint" technique, and the few other, small pieces will mostly be "edge-glued" (without glueing tabs, applying the glue directly on the edges of the paper).
