Tomb Raider II papercraft WIP 2: testbuilds

Making the work in progress pictures took me A LOT longer than before, because it turns out my middle right finger  ✋ doesn't really work the way it used to work, which makes PC work bad for me 😕 (which sucks extra hard for me because that's basically what I did for my job...)

It really takes A LOT longer now, and I 'm just showing you the test build of the papercraft Tomb Raider II vignette build, which luckily took about the same time...

Tomb Raider II papercraft WIP: what do Bugs Bunny and Barbarella have to do with Lara's adventure??

Right after the epic underwater portions on the wreck of the Maria Doria in Tomb Raider 2, Lara makes her way back to the surface in the offshore rig where she steals Marcoli Bartoli's flying boat to the next destination, the Barkhang Monastery...

Lara finds a bomber jacket on board the flying boat. Just like the SOLA wetsuit, Lara's bomber jacket becomes another iconic wardrobe change in her adventures, and cosplayers try to get it matching as close as they can! 🙂 

Lara cosplayers just dress in her short shorts underneath, but for the bomber jacket itself it looks best if can use the real insignia on her shoulders of course. Luckily the left one is big enough to recognize it as the Eighth Army Air Force patch.

The patch on her right arm ended up quite small though, and I think it would have stayed indecipherable for me without the help of other people's! Luckily Tomb Raider fans had found it a long time ago already: link! It's the 324th Bomb Squadron! If you know what you're looking for, I think you can recognize it as Bugs Bunny holding a bomb in front of a cloud. 😀

  

I think from the first time I played Tomb Raider 2 I would probably already recognized it only if the game developers would have told it in interviews or something, because the small textures are just so small (and it would be 2024 for the Remakes before making them bigger of course 😉)

Interesting though, the flight patches seem to be switched in the renders where the Eight Air Force patch is on the right shoulder while Bugs Bunny is on the left (?):

Which way you end up wearing them though (according to the renders or like in the game) you can simply buy the flight patches to make your own Lara bomber jacket cosplay! 😀

(and if you're not yet satisfied for Tomb Raider II memorabilia, as a bonus you can even get the Barbarella pin-up that the creators made for the art on Marco Bartoli's flying boat! 😉)

New free Tomb Raider The Base vignette papercraft WIP: tallest one yet ;o)

Sorry for the lack of updates during this extremely busy week I'm afraid, since the last update, but I can tell you that the new papercraft Tomb Raider vignette will be the tallest one I made so far, even taller than the young Lara one as you can see!

Of course in the game, the claw crane is actually a lot higher above Lara than this, but there's a reason why I didn't make the vignette even taller: it simply wouldn't fit on my papercraft shelf. 😋

New free Tomb Raider The Base vignette papercraft WIP: Lara final build

As you can see, I've been making good progress on my new papercraft Tomb Raider vignette since the test build!

Obviously, I've made quite a few of them by know, but I still always love what a difference taking some more time time and effort (and printing it on a higher setting of course) makes between a quick test build and the final build! 🙂)

I still have to make the stand of the vignette itself of course (well and the instructions and pictures and a silly release video that usually only I will find funny to be honest 😜)

What's this?? I thought Lara was "left for dead by her former mentor Von Croy trapped in the Great Pyramid" in Egypt, not "severed in half and decapitated by mafia gangsters" in a Russian naval base"!?

As you can see I've not been sitting idle: I did a test build of Lara for my new papercraft Tomb Raider vignette (and don't worry, she's already back in one piece and has her head again 😉)

Lara should be a bit more comfortable now without all those holes in her joints... 🙂

I had to change a lot of the textures to fix it, but I'm happy with how it turned out so far; stay tuned while I work some more on the new papercraft vignette!

New free Tomb Raider The Base vignette papercraft WIP start

I have tons more ideas for new papercrafts, including lots more Tomb raider vignettes!

I will probably never be able to make all the ones that I'd like to do, Lara being chased by an overhead crane claw in the loading bay of the Russian Base in Tomb Raider Chronicles will be one that I will be making! 😃

As you can see, I made the vignette plan that I'm happy with. To fit the game, the claw should be way higher up, but this way I can keep the papercraft vignette a "normal", manageable size (just a tiny bit taller than the one for Young Lara).

As for Lara herself, I like her winter camo outfit even though there are a lot of unjoined joints to fix before being able to make it into a papercraft model. That also means fixing a lot of instances where the texture will get messed up a lot when the 3D model changes... 😉

Well, she's almost done to be released for free on my papercraft webpage! 😀

papercraft Tomb Raider X-Ray Lara transparant computer screen test WIP

I test printed a few versions of the computer screen for my papercraft upcoming papercraft Tomb Raider  X-Ray Lara vignette on a printable transparancy (which I'm sure you'll agree will make for more interesting papercraft vignette than just printing a black computer screen on paper... 😉)

Note: if  the transparancy is quite thin, it might be too flimsy too stand up under its own weight. If it falls/folds over on itself maybe you can glue a thin metal wire or something like that to the two side edges of the screen to keep it standing up straight?

free papercraft Tomb Raider X-Ray Lara rest of the test build WIP

I finished test building X-Ray Lara for the papercraft vignette I'm making!

Some bones of Lara's arms ended up very thin but with thorough scoring before trying to fold the parts, I managed! (alternatively, you could just use 2D strips of paper for the thinnest bones)

I made Lara's ribcage in 2D as you can see and luckily her leg bones are just big enough to build and support her in 3D. 🦵😊

free papercraft Tomb Raider X-Ray Lara first test build WIP

I started a first test build for my papercraft Tomb Raider X-Ray Lara vignette!

I started with the stand which turned out really nice I think with the security desk watching Lara as she runs by. 😊

I'll make the computerscreen transparant in the final version, but it doesn't really matter now because this is just a test build; and I mixed up the texture images anyway: in the final version I want to use the screen that shows Lara's X-ray image. 🦴💀

(while we're on the subject of computer screen texture images: why is an image of the top-secret iris artefact showing on a random computer screen at a security checkpoint??)

free papercraft Tomb Raider 3D skeleton Lara vignette WIP

The actual game textures that you can extract with the 3D model from a classic Tomb Raider game (using the method I describe in this post) are always "scrambled up" for some reason.

I find it difficult to edit the 3D model with the textures into a base model that you can make into a decent papercraft that way, so I always cut up the extracted texture image into its separates pieces and combine those into a new texture image that's stitched together in a more logical way to make it easier for myself to recognize which piece of it belongs where on the 3D model.

I adjusted the pieces of the 3D model with the new textures,  so that there are no black lines showing around the edges anymore (that won't be necessary because there will be just be a physical hole between the ribs for example in the papercraft).

Like I said earlier, a lot of parts will be 2D pieces and they won't need to be double-sided like in the original game model (because in the papercraft, the visible backside will simply be white from the paper anyway for any 2D pieces 😋)

As always with most 3D video games model from this time, I had to properly connect the joints and pieces together because if they are not properly connected in the 3D model you can't glue them together in the papercraft in the end!

I mode Lara's foot flat so the papercraft will be able to stand on the full bottom of the foot.

I always like to be able to take Lara off the stand of my papercraft vignettes so I will try to make that work, but because she won't be able to balance very well in this running pose, the easy alternative option will be to just glue her permanently to the stand.

I think I'm pretty much done with the 3D work on Lara for now (and the stand I already did earlier and I'm pretty happy with at this point) so stay tuned for my future Work in process updates on X-Ray Lara!

free papercraft Tomb Raider vignette WIP: a bit of context

An important part of my papercraft Tomb Raider 'vignettes' are the stands that show which particular episode of Lara's adventures the vignette is from.

In this case I made part of the security hallway from the "Escape with the iris" episode from Tomb Raider Chronicles. Not an exact copy of course, because I want it to have the same size of my other vignettes to match the series!

So I will make a smaller security desk that will show Lara's X-ray on a display as she passes through; and although she didnt even bring her Dual Pistols with her for the VCI portion of Tomb Raider Chronicles, I think it will be okay if she takes them with her here since the paper version probably won't set off any alarms (I think...?)

I think the computer screen will look best when printed on a printable transparant sheet, making it transparant in the final papercraft (partial plasticcraft I guess? 😜) to show skeleton Lara through the screen.

But I'm getting (far) ahead of myself, since I just started the 3D part of making this new papercraft!  😉
