Free Halloween 2019 papercraft Dungeon Keeper 2 Horned Reaper RELEASE!

Being determined to make a Halloween 🎃 papercraft this year, I started this one (very 😉) early.

It's obviously the Horned Reaper, from Dungeon Keeper 2! 😈

...or actually, it's the official Quake 3 Arena skin that Bullfrog (the studio that created Dungeon Keeper and the Horned Reaper) made. On an archived version of the Bullfrog website, you can actually still download the skin using the "(Europe)" download link: archived Bullfrog website.

But if that link doesn't work for you and you still want the Q3A Horned Reaper skin, it's still on many Quake 3 Arena fansites. 😉

Even with a gap of three years, I made quite a few Halloween papercrafts already:

I hope you like them, have a spooky Halloween! 👻

Papercraft Final Fantasy X Iron Giant legs (and sword ;o) test build

So yeah... Compared to most character papercrafts, the Iron Giant's legs (and his sword 😉) are *huge*! Then again, he *is* a giant after all, so that's not that big a surprise.

I still think he won't be as tall as my other Final Fantasy X papercrafts though, since his torso is relatively short. If I make it any taller, I'll have to cut up the parts more than I want to fit them on a sheet of A4 paper. Of course I will continue the test build in this scale, and then decide if I like the size.

Some parts so far were pretty tricky, but that's true for pretty much all my papercrafts I think. 😉 And as always on a test build, I already found some parts that I think can use some more work, but so far, I think he looks pretty neat!

Stay tuned!

First papercraft FFX Iron Giant test build pieces are... big.

So... after reworking the 3D model, I unfolded the first parts to do a first test build. ...and I was a bit taken aback by how huge the parts would be compared to other papercrafts of mine!

Using the actual in-game scale of an Iron Giant relative to my earlier Lulu and Auron papercrafts would probably end up bigger than myself! 😋

But even making it about the same height as Lulu and Auron, would make most parts not even fit a single sheet of paper... So I made it a little bit smaller, and as you can see, some pieces are still relatively HUGE but at least fit on the paper.

I think I'll have to think about what size I'll want the final version to have some more after the test build, but for now, I'll go with this size and see whether the parts for the arms and torso will also fit on the paper (his head is actually tiny in comparison, so that will be okay). 😉

Stay tuned!

Is it weird to like finding free papercraft buses...?

Am I weird?  Well, if finding papercraft buses on websites of Japanese cities makes your day is weird, then yes, I'm weird.

...so I guess I'm weird. 😋

This papercraft bus is a bit more complex than the boxy buses from Handa City last week, but just as colourful! 🚍

Free hat! International Paper Modelers Convention Saturday, October 26, 2019

The annual International Paper Modelers Convention is a showcase for paper model enthusiasts: builders, designers and collectors. It will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at:
Hampton Inn & Suites
22700 Holiday Park Drive
Sterling, Virginia 20166
(703) 537-7800
For more information and directions (and to get your free hat!) visit the IPMC's website:
http://www.ipmc-info.org/

So why did Matt Bergstrom (who you may know from the Wurlington Press' Build Your Own Chicago and New York (and more!) papercraft series 😃) make a free hat?

Well, he is obviously using South Park tactics to attract more people to the event by promising free hats (if only Tweek had been smart enough to make them as digital downloads for people to make themselves... 😉)

Ah, those boys and their silly antics...

And why a Tiroler hat?

Well, because this year's IPMC's theme is Oktoberfest! 🍻

Final Fantasy X Iron Giant papercraft WIP update

When I make a papercraft from a video game, I always rework the original game model to be better suited for papercrafting (I normally use Metasequoia to do this, because it's a relatively simple 3D program to use that can do anything I want for papercraft modelling, and the file format works perfectly with Pepakura Designer, which I use to unfold the 3D model into 2D papercraft parts). 💻

The most important thing I rework are any 'collisions' (parts going through other parts because that's simply not possible in the physicial world of course) but also tiny parts or folds that would be very difficult to handle on the final papercraft model, while adding not much visible detail on the size of papercrafts I like to make them (although you can keep those of course if you want to make a very detailed papercraft, or a very big one where those pieces wouldn't be so small anymore 😊)

Another thing that I like to do, is to break up the model up into pieces that you can build in separate sections instead of one hollow shell. This often makes assembling the final papercraft model much easier and the paper model will be even stronger!

Although these 3D reworking steps are probably not very interesting to see (staring at a virtual 3D model you can't touch on a computer screen...) I think they're actually the most important steps and probably take me the most time when making papercraft models, and I figured I'd give a quick update so you know it will probably be a while before this Paper Giant is finished... 😉

Stay tuned!

free papercraft toy Halloween monsters from Epilog Laser

Here are some more cute papercraft toy monsters for Halloween! 👻🤖👾

Epilog Laser sells laser cutters and made these free papercraft toys to show off how well their machines would be able to cut these for you. The download file includes CorelDRAW vector files to tell their machines where to cut and score the cardstock, but if take note of the bleed (the overflow of colour along the actual edges of the parts) you can just as easily cut them with your craft's knife of course. You can convert the *.cdr files (with the free online service Zamzar for example) to a file format that Photoshop or a free alternative (like Gimp (raster) or Inkscape (vector)) can open and add them as a layer on top of the actual templates before printing them. (but maybe these papercraft toy examples it will make you want to buy one of their laser cutting machines?) 🎃

Next papercraft project: Iron Giant (not that one though, sorry...!)

(yes, I have a widescreen monitor now; my old one died...)
With my Halloween 🎃 papercraft well underway I'm confident to finish it well in time. I would really like to pick up my 'usual' papercraft series as well of course; I already did with the Tomb Raider Home Sweet Home vignette, the LEGO monkey, and just recently Paper Puppet Zelda. So I figured next would be a Final Fantasy papercraft (the last one is from 6 years ago, so it's about time...)

Now that still left *a lot* of options with all the possible characters from all the Final Fantasy games of course, but this time, I chose one of the enemies from arguably my favourite Final Fantasy game: an Iron Giant from Final Fantasy X!

I used yaz0r's ModelviewerWXD3D9 in combination with Roman Lut's 3D Ripper DX to extract the game model, but as you saw from Paper Puppet Zelda and many of my other previous papercrafts, it will probably take me some time working on this original 3D model before I can even think about unfolding it (although actually it's best to think about how you want to unfold it *while* you work on the 3D model, but you get what I mean right...? 😉)

Stay tuned!

(Papercraft) plans for the (near) future ;o)

When I'm doing a longer papercraft project like Paper Puppet Zelda 👸 especially in the final stages, I often like to take a break from it and just work on something else a bit.

So I've already been thinking about the next papercraft model; I actually have not one, not two, but three new ideas for new Tomb Raider vignettes that I'm aching to do!

I'm a big Tomb Raider fan, and the vignettes are turning into a really nice series. I think I want to keep them a surprise though until I really decide to make them the next papercraft project, because maybe it's a bit soon to make another Tomb Raider papercraft again already with so many other ideas as well... 😉

So another idea I had was making a new Final Fantasy model (I mean, it's been six years...(!) so that's a very probable option.

And of course, since it's October, I *really* want to make a Halloween papercraft again. 🎃 So much in fact, that I already started thinking about it in August, and I've actually been working on it off and on since. As you can see, it's already pretty much ready for the final build, so I should have plenty of time to get it ready for Halloween.

Stay tuned as always!

Need a new (papercraft Kemono) Friend?

Okapis can grow to be about 1.5 meters tall with a body length of about 2.5 meters long. They eat leaves, grasses and fruits and have a typical lifespan of about 20-30 years. 🐾

This papercraft toy of the Okapi character from Kemono Friends by Bu-hi however is much smaller so you can fit it on your desk, doesn't need to eat and can last for as long as you keep it safe. If you decide to build it, they'd love for you to share a picture with them on Twitter! 😀
