Papercraft Master Chief WIP 10: how I determined the size I would make my First Person Shooter papercrafts

The rumors are true: I basically based the size of my papercraft 3D shooter character series on how big I could make them while still getting both legs on one sheet of the template.

So that's maybe not the expected reason for some of you 😋 but this way, they ended up being about 18-20 cm each (there are some small size differences) and for me that turned out to be just a nice size to make them for me as well (of course you can always print them a bit bigger or smaller if you want to).

I finished Master Chief's final templates, after I changed the last (I think; you never know 😉) few things that I wanted to change after the test build.

Papercraft Master Chief WIP 9: finished test build :o)

Just made a small test build of Master Chief's MA5B assault rifle too. 🙂

Not so much to see if the rifle itself will  build okay, but wether the hands and arms have the right position to hold the rifle so that the paper Master Chief Model as a whole will look okay.

I think it will be fine, so I only have to make a few small changes that I want to now that the test build is finished and then I will start the final build. Stay tuned! 😉

Papercraft Master Chief WIP 7: Armed test build

Okay, the test build like this looks a bit strange without the MA5B rifle in his hands (and without a head... 😝) But remember it's just a quick update again. 😉

Like I said last time, I haven't glued the torso to the legs yet; it's just easier to glue on the arms if I can still reach inside through the wider hole on the bottom.

Because that's what I did, I added the arms! And I'm happy I changed them btw, like I said on the update a little while back: link

The hands are always a bit tricky, not just because of the smaller and thinner pices, but also because how the fingers, palm and thumb connect together usually. But I think it turned out okay. 🙂

So I'm going to continue, test building the head (well the iconic helmet). I'm planning a little something special with iit, but I'll keep that a surprise until the final build... 😊

Papercraft Master Chief WIP 6: test build start :o)

For some reason, most of the times I start my papercraft characters with the legs; (that reason being I can check from the start if the papercraft will be able to stand on its own 😉)

And to be honest, because the legs are usually not too tricky, so it's a nice start to get into building a new papercraft! 🙂

I also did the torso; I didn't glue it to the legs yet, so I can still use the hole on the bottom for now to glue on the arms next, it'll be a bit easier if you can still reach inside the torso I think.

That's what a test build is for too really, to find out if everything fits together properly, and if some things can be a little easier maybe by changing the folds or flaps, or maybe even by changing the build order. 🙂

So far, it's going pretty well; stay tuned!

I *LOVE* to read! As an adult I can easily buy a book that I want to read, but when I was younger, I was fortunate to have a public library very near to where I lived and my parents would often take me there. 📖😊

free papercraft Czech Army Mi-35/24V Alien Tiger 2 by Jan Rükr

Maybe you've seen earlier free papercrafts of Jan Rükr on my blog here?

Then you'll know he's a huge fan of the Aliens series, and has had a few different websites over the years with really nice papercrafts of the movies (and other things too).

I hadn't seen this one yet though, as it's pretty recent: it's a papercraft version of a Czech Army Mi-35/24V helicopter with a Giger Alien camouflage paintjob!

(the real version from 2016 also had a Predator on one of its sides, and in a 2019 version there are some Terminator influences as well)

The kits

• I got 4 sets; the Snow Biome is a Medium set with about 48 Pieces, The Hostile Mobs, Animal Mobs and the Utility Pack are Small sets with over 30 Pieces
• Each set has several papercraft creatures and Blocks (the Utility Pack only has furniture pieces)
• The Snow Biome set has some neat transparant Ice Blocks
• All the sets have a small sticker sheet and an instruction manual
• The parts are pre-cut and pre-scored and work with the "tab-in-slot" method, so you don't even need a knife or glue!
• I tried them out as you can see, and they are made very well, although you just have to be carefully when pushing out some of the thinner pieces (and I bought doubles, so of course the winners will get the unopened, unused boxes 😉)

Papercraft Master Chief WIP 5: Next,I think a first test build

Like I said before, I  don't really need to change that much to make Master Chief's game model into a papercraft. Since last time, I changed the arms again and the hands and helmet and I think I'll do a first test build now. 🙂

Papercraft Master Chief WIP 4, more 3D editing: I think I maybe changed a bit too much :op

Yesterday's WIP post was just an intermezzo; I'm still working on remodelling the 3D model I extracted from the game to make it fit a papercraft model in the end a bit nicer.

I'm actually not changing that much, but I can't work on it all the time of course, so I do it in small parts. After last time changing the legs a bit, now I've done the waist, torso and arms too.

Like I said earlier, some pieces like the elbows really have to be changed: pieces that 'go through each other' like this can't be done in papercraft later on!

This particular game model actually doesn't really has many issues like this, and they're easily changed:

But like I said, a lot of the changes I'm making are just a personal choice. I did stop after changing the arms though, because when I took a step book to see what it looked like, I felt I changed the connection between the arms and the torso (the armpit/shoulder area) a bit too much and it didn't really look like how I wanted... (it's easier to see from the back I think)

I pretty much 'blended' the shoulders/armpits into the body, while in the game, there's a distinctive, black transition 'part', where the shoulder/armpit narrows a bit and then connects to torso.

So you see sometimes you can end up not liking a change you made. 😛

But if you don't,: just change it again until you do: it's your papercraft you're making! 😉
