Even though the plan for the ELT observatory comes from the European Southern Observatory organization, it is being built at Cerro Armazones in the Atacama desert in Chile, South-America because:
- At 3,000 meters elevation, it's literally closer to space so that there's less atmosphere to interfere with the ELT's observations of space;
- The Atacama desert is a dry place, so the sky will be clear for space watching! 😊
The ELT is very fittingly named because with its 39-meter primary mirror, the Extremely Large Telescope 🔭 will be the biggest optical telescope when it will be completed (2028 if all goes as planned)!
