After the Imperial Japanese Navy lost four of their aircraft carriers in the Battle of Midway during World War II, they planned to convert the Ise-class battleships into full-sized carriers in a desperate attempt to make up for the losses.
But with time and resources in short supply, instead they were only given a small hangar and a short flight deck which allowed the launch of aircraft, but not their recovery.
