papercraft Tomb Raider III RX-Tech Mines vignette WIP 4: finally started test building Lara

*Finally* I managed to start test building Lara!

Although... I think she forgot to duck the girders a few times during her mine cart rides in the RX-Tech mines...😆😋

(just kidding, of course; I just didn’t get around to test building her head yet)

Lara's Arctic camo pants went together fine, and she can stand nicely in the sloped mine cart for the vignette:

Her Rock Technology snow jacket however was pretty tricky to build, because her upper body is twisted to make the swing for the switch: 

I'll change a few things on the 3D model to unfold for the final version, and I'll finish test building the rest of Lara (although I don't anticipate many problems; the rest of Lara is pretty similar to my other  papercraft vignettes). 😇

Then like I said, I'll unfold the final ('fixed') version, build her myself, make the instructions, pictures, a video with a happier ending and then I'll upload the parts and instructions to my papercraft download website again. 🙂

papercraft Tomb Raider III RX-Tech Mines vignette WIP 3 (Lara test unfold)

Since last time, I fixed/changed the things on the minecart 3D model that I felt could be done a little bit better after test build, like some of the textures, difficult connections, stuff like that.

Oh, and I totally forgot the lights on the sides of the minecart, but I added them now. 😉

And I did a quick test unfold lf Lara herself! 😊

Although I made quite a few paper vignette Laras by now, each one is still a little different, so I still always like to make a test build. Test builds are quick and ugly, just to try out whether all the parts fit together the way I imagined, if it's easier to assemble a certain order, whether the textures that I edited look okay (or a least passable 😉), if the fold lines don’t stand out too much, etc.

You can also see I don't really care about the paper size in Pepakura Designer, since I always do the final layout and finishing touches of the templates in Photoshop. You can also print papercrafts directly from Pepakura Designer/Viewer though, if that's your thing. 😉

I always like to try to place the parts on the templates next to the ones they should be glued to, or at least so that it makes (a bit of 😉) sense. I think it helps to build the papercraft, but usually for a test build, I just put them on the templates the way they fit on the paper best.

All that will have to wait until next time though, since it will b a busy week *again*...

papercraft Tomb Raider III RX-Tech Mines vignette quick test build (WIP 2)

So with an extra day off, I decided to do a quick test build of the stand and minecart for the new Tomb Raider III papercraft vignette I'm making. 😊

One conclusion: the minecart is sooo big when you print it! 😂 It's basically 5 big parallellograms on the outside and 5 big parallellograms on the inside; that's basically 2 pages for just the minecart tub, and then another 1 the bottom and wheels.

To fit the minecart on it, the stand will be a bit bigger than the usual 9 cm x 9 cm (more like Young Lara's 9 cm x 12 cm stand), and I made the lever Lara has to hit to switch tracks slant outwards a bit:

Also, you gotta love those 90's early 3d video game style blocky, hexagonal wheels, (well at least I like them for nostalgia's sake I guess 😋) so I decided to keep them that way and not make them a bit more rounded. 😇

• but a miniature model railway, is *just* right. 🚂😊

That's what Maasoever Spoorweg Barendrecht must have thought as well, because they operate a ridable miniature model railway for visitors to ride along on!

The miniature railway is closed at the moment, but the volunteers are keeping busy maintaining the trains and the little railway park. And they have something to do for railfans at home too, with this free papercraft freight locomotive to color and build to download! 😃

free 1909 Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard cantilever harbor crane

MuuMu makes interactive videos and VR/AR/MR apps. They are based in Nagasaki, and they made several interactive 360° videos (the kind where you can move the view around yourself) for the Heritage Nagasaki YouTube channel:

The reason that I am telling you about this company them of course, is that they have a free papercraft model of Japan's oldest electrical-powered giant cantilever harbor crane! 😀

It was imported from Scotland in 1909 during Japan's Meji industrial revolution, and is the oldest crane of its kind still in operation today!
