Yuna test build underway

I was able to finish all the unfolding and start a test build this weekend, the above
picture is so that you know it *did* happen. ;o)

Yuna progress: slow but sure

I haven't had much time to do a lot of work on Yuna during the week... Usually when I have only half an hour or so I rather do something small like update my papercraft link list (checking the websites I bookmarked over the years to see if they still exist and/or if they have new models) than try and start something I won't be able to finish that day anyway (it's another reason why I like cutting my models into seperate pieces: it's easier to finish one part after another that way ;o)

I did manage to do *some* work on Yuna, though: her head was basically all unfolded already and now her legs are too. Hopefully I'll have some more time during the weekend so that I can finish the unfolding process (that's actually the easy part) and start a test build.

Yuna's in pieces!?

The first part of Yuna's unfolding is finished, her head has made the step from 3d to 2D.

On more complex models like this one, I like break the model apart into different sections for the unfolding step in Pepakura, so that when I do a test build and it turns out I need to re-model the hair because it turns out what I had in mind doesn't work, I don't have to unfold and edit all the flaps and fold lines on the torso, arms and legs again too...

And oh yeah; she's green because I find it easier to see what I'm doing that way. Not to worry though, that's just a matter of reloading the textures. ;o)

Stay tuned for more!

Yuna ready for pepakura

My last post wasn't completely accurate, because I should have said: I started working on Yuna again: I already did some work on her a year ago or so (when a project becomes too tedious or boring for me, I usually start a new model as a distraction).

And I soon remembered why it got tedious the last time: the hair has a lot of layering, so I re-did basically the bottom half, and I re-did the face completely because well, it had like a million parts...

But of course this meant I had to make a new texture image for the face, because the existing one was made for a high poly mesh: it's "stretched" a little differently. Likewise for the arms and legs, I re-did those so I could make them in fewer parts in the final paper model, and because for example the shorts and the upper legs were originally two different parts in the texture image, now they needed to be one.

I simplified most parts and worked out ways how the parts could fit together in paper with all the layering, modeled the cloth draped over her left leg and gave Yuna her Tiny Bee gun back.

So you can imagine it was *a lot* of work, but I was able to get pretty far this weekend and basically finish the work on the 3D model. She looks all ready to go into Pepakura to be unfolded, which I'll start during the week and probably finish next weekend.

Final Fantasy X-2 Yuna papercraft W.I.P.

This time you don't have to guess what I'm working on (because I'm sure you would have guessed easily anyway... ;o)

It's Yuna in her Gunner outfit from Final Fantasy X-2. Although the original Final Fantasy X was the better game, I like Yuna's character design in FFX-2 more (it's the other way around for Rikku, that's why I made her in the FFX version ;o)

As you can see the game model I'm starting with is a whole lot more complex than my two recent Tomb Raider projects, so this one will probably take *a bit* longer to re-model... I'll try to keep you guys up to date on my progress!

So... How big *is* a T-Rex skull??

When I told you I had no idea how much you would need to enlarge my T-Rex Trophy head to make it lifesized, I could have easily found out of course: that info is all over the net.

Like on the website of the Field Museum in Chicago, where they have the largest, most complete and best preserved T-Rex skeleton in their collection: "Sue".

At their site, they have an interactive section where you can measure the T-Rex skeleton. It turns out that the skull is just about 5 feet (over 1.5 meters) long, and the templates I provided on my website will let you build a model of about 10.5 cm (4 inches) long from the back of the head to the tip of the nose.
So now you can calculate how much you would need to scale it up for a lifesized version.

I think the biggest problem will be to find a large enough printer to print the parts... ;o)

My papercraft web links collection

I have been making paper models for quite some while now, and besides making my own, I also enjoy building other people's models. There are many different websites out there that offer nice models to download and build, and I would like to share my link collection with you.

I have made a start here, but it will take me some time to check all the websites I have bookmarked to see if they even still exist and what kind of (new) models they might offer. I will also try to categorize them all appropriately. I will update the list whenever I some time again, so be sure to check back from time to time!

T-Rex trophy head for over your mantelpiece

I don't usually manage to release two paper models so shortly after one another, but this is a very simple one again, with only 8 big parts (just 5 for the head, and 3 for the wall mount plaque) on 2 sheets.

The idea to make this one came to me when I was looking for the Racetrack Key to take a good screenshot for my quad bike project and ended up in the trophy room where Lara keeps her "souvenirs" from her earlier adventures.

Besides the Atleantean Scion (broken in pieces) from the original Tomb Raider, the Dagger of Xian from Tomb Raider 2, a golden idol that's actually from "Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark" and the Iris artifact that we wouldn't actually get to see until Tomb Raider 4 and 5, there is this T-Rex head.

You know the old saying: if you manage to fell a T-Rex, you get to hang his head over your mantelpiece. ;o)

Download it from my site as usual: www.kickme.to/ninjatoes, I'm afraid I don't know how much you would need to scale it for a 1:1 version though, sorry...

Have fun building!

PaperCraft Museum.com

This nice little video of the Naruto papercraft from Bongo Papercraft was made by Haywan Chiu. Some time ago, he sent in pictures of the young Link and "Going Merry" he made for the "hall of fame" on my website.

And his enthusiasm for papercraft hasn't cool down since then; quite the opposite in fact. Now he has made his own website called PaperCraft Museum, with links to many great models out there on the web, and little instructional videos showing you the techniques he uses building paper models.

It's only just starting, but the site looks nice and simple (which usually means a lot of work has gone into it!) and shows a lot of promise to become a great resource for all you paper modelers out there, so be sure to pay it a visit!

Congrats on your new site Chiu, have fun!

Quad bike galore

I'm really fond of the way the first 3D games looked, and ever since I discovered Pepakura, I love how you can recreate that polygonal goodness almost perfectly in paper: the quad bikes were so much fun when I first played Tomb Raider 3, I have no idea why I didn't make paper models of them before...

But now I finally have, with 4 different body kits:
  • Red and white quad bike from the trainings level.
  • Green camouflaged quad bike from the "River Ganges" level.
  • Brown/tan camouflaged quad bike from the "Nevada Desert" level.
  • White and yellow "S.L.I.N.C." quad bike from the Lost Artifact add-on ("Shakespeare Cliff" level).

Oddly enough, even though the models are all basically the same, the texture mapping is different due to the method used in the ripping process (I think...?). So it was actually a bit more work than I hoped to create all four different quad bikes...

But it was worth it, because I am happy with the results. I also included a blank template for you to print on colored cardstock, or to color yourself to make your own designs.

And last but not least, there is an extra bonus that I kept a secret: Lara Croft in classic Tomb Raider 3 style to ride them. The parts and instructions are available from my papercraft webpage, have fun building!

"King of Red Lions" Great Sea base

Those of you who like to watch the "hall of fame" on my website, will probably have noticed the awesome looking Great Sea base Josh Darrah made for the "King of Red Lions" he built.

It's his own scratchbuilt work, but I asked him if he would be willing to share it with the rest of us, and he is: it's just going to take him some time to put together a template file so it can be shared.

He will get back to me when he finishes it, so just be patient, and in the meantime you could start working on King?

Tomb Raider 3 quad bike update

To celebrate the end of my three week vacation (yeah right, like that's any reason to celebrate..........) I bring you an update on my paper Tomb Raider quad bike project.

As I suspected, the unfolding didn't cause any real problems, but the test test build did reveal a few imperfections of the kind that you easily overlook when staring at a computer screen, like one or two folds that go one direction on one side, but on the other side they go the other direction... But I already fixed these and unfolded the fixed parts again, so I'll make it available from my website some time this week (I hope) so you too can relive the polygon nineties. ;o)

Tomb Raider 3 quad bike wip

My latest project has made it to the unfolding stage in Pepakura (as you can see). If you hadn't recognized it already, it's the quad bike from Tomb Raider 3.
Like I said in the previous post, it's a simple model, so I'm not expecting any major problems during the test build and finalizing (but that's usually when the ground falls out from underneath your feet, right Har? ;o)

Got a new camera

I got a new camera today: a Kodak Easyshare C713. It's a much better camera than what I had before (Trust FamilyCam Flash 500) so I hope that when I take pictures now, they will be much sharper and you'll be able to see a lot more detail that may help you figure out how certain parts go together, despite my "less than perfect" camera skills... ;o)

New papercraft in progress

Here's a sneak preview of my newest project, those who know my website a little might be able to recognize what it's from.

As you can see it's a fairly simple model, which is one of the reasons I decided to make this my next project rather than a more complex model again; I'm hoping a small, simple model like this will be easy to build and yet will look great on my desk! ;o)

Bandwidth exceeded: use RapidShare

My newest papercrafts will always be hosted on my own personal webspace to allow everybody to download it without any problems, but some of my older works rely on a free filehost with a bandwidth limit of 5 GB every 30 days.

So for some of the download links on my papercraft website you might get a message saying: Bandwidth Exceeded :(

For those models, there will always be a RapidShare download mirror available for you to use, so you can still download the files you want without having to wait for the bandwidth to reset.

Midna papercraft finished

Oh yeah, before I forget: I also finished the Midna papercraft model I was working on (wasn't that hard to guess, was it?).

So that's that: finally, more than a year and a half after Wolf Link, I got around to making Midna to ride on his back.

Instead of making her the same style (with lots of details meaning lots of tiny folds and difficult to build) I decided to keep on experimenting in my search for a better balance between detail<->easiness. As a result, Midna only uses 32 parts on 3 pages. If you're a quick builder, it will probably only take you one afternoon/evening to build.

As said, to get the files needed to build your own paper Midna, you will need to visit my website (Fevernova puzzle ball not included).

I hope you like her, have fun building!

Two eared Lara

Two eared Lara? Nothing wrong with that, right? Except that TR-Maniac has brought to my attention, that my Lara Croft figure from Tomb Raider: Legend, has two right ears, instead of a right and a left one... ;o)

I must have overlooked it with all the copy-pasting and mirroring I was doing when I designed the model, but now I fixed it and replaced the downloads on my website with the new files.

He has a very nice build of my Lara Croft model in his DeviantART gallery; I don't know if it has two right ears, or that he fixed it himself before building, though...?

My new weblog and DeviantART gallery

During my (far too short) vacation, I have been thinking about how popular papercraft is becoming on the internet.

There are many websites and blogs about papercraft, and I found that on DeviantART, many Deviants have discovered papercraft as well. So I decided to join them: I already have my own papercraft website, but now I also made this blog and a DeviantART gallery of my own.

I want to keep my papercrafts on www.kickme.to/ninjatoes (so if you want to download and build some of your own, you will have to go there ;o) so what to do with this blog? I always tried to keep as little text on my website as I could, because I believe that since most people will just be there to download the parts and instructions to build their own paper models, they should only have to read as little as possible, and be able to just click a few pictures and links to make their choice from my models.

So as an experiment, I will treat that as my "download area" and this as my "talk area", whenever I feel like saying something others might find interesting. Which might not be a whole lot, but we'll see how it works out. ;o)
